A long time ago, balloons were made out of animal parts
The Aztecs are thought to be the very first people in history to make ‘balloon animals’ out of the bowels of cats to be presented to the gods as a sacrifice.
Imagine your birthday party and instead of colourful balloons, it was animal bowels that decorated the room!
Now small balloons are made from a thin and stretchy material; Balloons are manufactured from a liquid rubber called latex.
The first rubber balloons were made in London by Professor Michael Faraday in 1824
In 1825 the first toy balloons were introduced by rubber manufacturer Thomas Hancock
A balloon is an inflatable flexible bag made of latex that is usually filled with gas.
There are also very large balloons used for hot air ballooning, these are normally made of fabrics.
Latex has great elasticity – it can be stretched to eight times its original length and still return to its former shape!
The natural rubber latex that we use comes from the sap of the rubber tree
The rubber tree commonly used is Hevea Brasiliensis, which grows in Malaysia
This gas can be helium, hydrogen, or air.
The balloon gets its color from the pigment that is added to the latex.
The strength of balloons can be affected by the pigment if the pigment particle is large in size
Most small balloons are made for parties or celebrations, big balloons are used for things like hot air balloons
